A biography of Dr Peter Cormack Sutherland who spent a long and eventful career in public service while living in colonial Natal. During his life he was informally known among fellow-settlers as "the Little Doctor". Among Africans he was known as "Asekilandi". On his death in 1900 he was recognised by his peers as "The Colonial Officer par Excellence", an apt description of a man who had devoted his life to the welfare of the colony.
