Summary

Alan Fearnley stood apart from the mourners at his brother's funeral, uncertain of his welcome in the Welsh valley after an absence of 15 years. Only Jeff's death in an accident had brought Alan back to the restrictive rule of Aunt Matty, from which Jeff had never escaped. Now, a successful accountant, at a crossroads in his professional and personal life, he had returned to his native Wales and found himself, almost immediately, cast in an unfamiliar role. Alan was used to scrutinising figures; now he was asked to scrutinise facts, for someone was claiming insistently that Jeff's death was no accident.
