Documentary tracing the life of a chimpanzee that was raised as part of a New York family during the 1970s. Part of a scientific project attempting to challenge Noam Chomsky's thesis that language is inherent only in humans, Nim the chimpanzee was raised by human surrogate parents in a home environment. Following Nim's life as he interacts with his human hosts, the film charts the controversy surrounding the case, and the impact Nim had on those who worked with him.
