In 1865 Charles Dickens narrowly escapes death in the Staplehurst Rail Disaster. He slowly descends into madness as he hunts the individual he believes to be responsible for the carnage, a spectural figure known as Drood. He enlists the help of his friend Wilkie Collins and together they venture into the lawless crypts beneath London.
