ute is known as the "golden fiber of Bengal" because of its color and high economic value, which made it a key commodity for the British Empire's global trade and a significant source of profit. The term refers to the fiber's color, silky texture, and golden sheen, and the significant wealth generated from its production and export from the Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent, now comprising parts of India and Bangladesh. The Stepney Community Trust got funding for this project bout a dozen community participants will be recruited, trained and supported to deliver this unique project. They will explore and share how, for more than one hundred years, jute became a British Empire monopoly and the primary fibre for making sacks and bags that carried raw materials, food, commodities and manufactured products in ships that moved across the world’s oceans to major cities and ports in all the continents.
