Sparks from Sheffield smoke : a Perthshire poet's legacy revisited

Buchanan, S.K.2024
Books, Manuscripts
Nineteenth-century poet Francis Buchanan reluctantly left behind his beloved Perthshire homeland, but settled in Sheffield, where his second volume of poetry was published in 1882. Sparks from Sheffield Smoke: a Series of Local and Other Poems offers rhyme inspired by settings such as Wincobank Hill, Sheffield Manor, Haddon Hall and Ecclesall Churchyard. Local characters are immortalised in verse, and more. A selection has been revived by his great-great-granddaughter in this fascinating insight comprising local history, bygone celebrated poets, the Duftys of Sheffield, and war poems. Includes a notable elegy to Sheffield Castle; also reminiscences of Perth's Kinnoull Hill and River Tay.
