Bygone Newburgh

Pearson, E.2010
Books, Manuscripts
There has been a settlement on the present site since the twelfth century but the village grew in importance when Lindores Abbey was built in approximately 1180 in the then Forest of Parkhill. It was occupied by Benidictine monks who were skilled at fruit-growing and planted many fruit trees. Since then Newburgh has always been an orchard town and it is sometimes called The Garden of Fife. In 1631 King Charles I created Newburgh as a Royal burgh.
