1815: Parthena arrives in a small Yorkshire village to take up a post as governess, only to find that the family has moved away, leaving her stranded on her own in an unfamiliar place. Here she meets Jerome Fender, a soldier returning from the wars. He is enchanted by Thena and offers to help her. Full of desperation, however, she 'borrows' his money, shouting a promise to pay him back as she flees. Incensed, Jerome vows to find her and get his money back - as well as an explanation.
