After a bomb attack causes destruction in Sunderland, Polly is determined to do her bit for the war effort. Given her family's history as shipbuilders, working as a welder on the shipyard seems like the perfect way to help. The shipyard is a whole new world for Polly and the work is exhausting, but her new-found friends on the docks all rally round to help each other out. It isn't long though before Polly's head is turned by a young man, Tommy. It's clear that the attraction between them is mutual, but Polly can see that she might have competition for Tommy's affections.
